TV Dinners (Inspired by MonkeyMama)!

July 19th, 2017 at 12:49 am

So...after reading MonkeyMama's blog: Eating In, it reminded me of a suggestion one of my co-workers shared a few years ago. She, who after going through a divorce, found it difficult to eat healthy and consistently with the hectic work schedule we manage along with trying to find work/life balance as well.

This was her idea: Go to DG and purchase a half dozen or so plastic dinner plates that were sturdy enough to withstand hot and cold temps along with being dishwasher safe. Also, unless you already had one, a shrink wrapping devices (FoodSaver I think?).

Her idea was to cook a full course meal on Sunday and essentially pre-prepare individual dinners on the DG plates for the entire week (less Saturday and Sunday of course). Once done, shrink wrap them and stack them neatly in the freezer. As each day goes by, grab one to go or thaw and re-heat. Rotate as applicable and may throw in a dessert or two.

She transferred to another area shortly after and I never did find out if she acted on this idea. Nonetheless, does anyone do anything like this at all? Has it helped streamline dinners?

I think lots of us have, shall we say, frozen assets. We usually have at least two or three dinners in the freezer. In the fall there's chili, and we always have meatballs, jarred sauce, and other fast things.

There are so many 'grades' of plastic it's easier to use glassware in the microwave and dishwasher to avoid the risk of leaching.

I found it efficient to use good quality, sandwich sized, ziplock bags, careful to remove as much air as practical. They stack well in the fridge freezer and item is easily squeezed [if thawed in fridge] into a pyrex or ceramic container to heat in microwave or toaster oven as preferred. If frozen, scissors easily slit the bag open.

I don't use plastic dinner plates or a foodsaver (I wish I did have a foodsaver, though!), I do almost all cooking on Sunday. It helps me to have meals cooked and ready to go. Basically, all I have to do is take a glass Pyrex dish from the freezer and defrost it. Later, I warm it up on the stove or in the microwave. I make lunches for my husband like this. The last thing I want to do when I come home from work is cook and having food allergies, eating out or getting takeout is not really an option.

Another reason to do this is that in summer, it helps to not heat up my house so much and overwork the a/c if I can do most cooking on Sunday.
